Coin Money A1 S8 C5
The Congress shall have Power To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin… ~ A1 S8 C5
It is the responsibility of Congress to “produce the national coin, prescribe the weight and fineness or value, and specify the value of foreign coin in terms of the national coin of the United States.” (1)
In the original draft of the Constitution, this included the power to “emit bills of credit” however after heated debate the Framers struck out this phrase in light of the misery that printed money had caused during and after the American Revolution. Of course too many bills were printed, causing inflation and the resulting higher costs. The value of their dollar plummeted to less than one penny but that is more than ours is worth today!
Let’s hear what several of the Framers said about allowing money to be printed which means “emitting bills of credit”:
Gouverneur Morris “Moved to strike out ‘and emit bills on the credit of the United States.’ If the United States had credit, such bills would be unnecessary; if they had not, unjust and useless.”(2)
James Wilson agreed, “It will have a most salutary influence on the credit of the United States to remove the possibility of paper money…”(3)
John Langdon “Had rather reject the whole plan than retain the three words ‘and emit bills’”(4)
George Read “Thought the words, if not struck out, would be as alarming as the mark of the beast in Revelations.”(5)
Father, how have we, as a culture, fallen so far from the wisdom that You imparted to the Framers of our Constitution? How have we so thoroughly despised Your wisdom and instruction? Please forgive us and help us turn from our wicked, covetous ways. Teach us how to honor You with our wealth, how to work hard, save for the future and teach our little ones how to be content in our circumstances while we work with You to restore our Biblical Heritage. We humbly ask for this Abba Father, in Jesus Name, Amen.
