Teaching His Story

History Courses by Dr. Brenda MacMenamin

History taught from original documents and the Biblical Worldview

Understanding History (His Story) is essential to understanding God’s Mission for us to Make disciples and Build His Kingdom. Our curriculum goes beyond Marxist rewritten narratives and methodologies to presenting the “Mighty Deeds of God” in the four year High school History courses. Authentic American History, which delves into the true stories and events that God used to shape America and gave her Liberty; Ancient History Using the Bible, which provides a global perspective on what God has done up to the Reformation, starting with “In the Beginning…”;  American Government and Economics, which examines the development of self and civil government based on Biblical principle which the Framers used to form the political systems and economic theories that still influence America’s contemporary governance and market practices, (but we do need to understand Biblical Principles of Economics to restore them). Universal History Part II will share what God has done in other nations up to the present and includes Geography and mission reports. Our goal is to provide students with a well-rounded education that fosters Biblical thinking and a deeper appreciation for God’s heart and plans.

Authentic American History Video Teaching by Brenda MacMenamin

The readings for this course I have compiled from original documents. Volume 1 begins with a brief summary of why it is crucial to learn history from original documents, as our American History began to be re-written in the early 1900’s. It documents how the philosophy of education was hi-jacked in the early 1800’s and how to restore truly Biblical Worldview and Methodology. The early method of American education used the “4R’s” (Research, Reason, Relate, Record). This method will be taught and practiced to recover and produce brilliant thinkers and
writers.

Authentic American History covers the Reformation period, when the Word was printed for the common man into his common language. Learning the Word affected the way he lived. We’ll focus on this movement in England. This leads into the Puritans, then the Separatists, then the Pilgrims and their adventure to America. The Colonial period is covered with the stand for independence then the issue of slavery, into the Civil War. We will look into the Progressive era, then how to recover our culture for Christ.

Students will be reading excerpts from original documents that bring life to the time periods and their studies. Four days the student will read and have discussion questions and vocabulary studies. The fifth day is to Review, Relate and Record by writing a 300 word essay.

Ancient History Using the Bible Teaching by Brenda MacMenamin

This course on Ancient History is World History I. It begins “In the Beginning” and traces through the Bible as the main resource to study what happened from @ 4000 BC until the Reformation. We will use a timeline, extensive maps, and use resources that dovetail with the Bible to study the people groups in different nations.

We will use a resource that my children loved: What the Bible is All About: Reproducible Maps, Charts, Timelines and Illustrations. My daughter (who is now homeschooling her children) says that she learned the most about the Bible from this class. We’ll see the actual timeline of the books (the Bible is not in chronological order!) We will study the kings of Judah and Israel (some have the same names!) This study will take some confusion out of our life long pursuit of being Biblically literate and give a wonderful understanding of Ancient History. We will use the Bible itself as the core of History. We will also use Streams of Civilization, Volume I, Third Edition, to study the different nations in more depth.

You will need to purchase these resources:

Economics Overview: This is a thoroughly practical Christian Economics course. Every Christian needs to develop an understanding of these principles to know what practices will build freedom, prosperity and justice. Then we as a culture will know what practices to embrace and which to refuse, which will bring success and prosperity and which will bring poverty and despair.

This course gives you a vision of personal economic responsibility as a Christian. We will define economics and explain it from the Word of God and from His Story. We will challenge you, the reader, to take this knowledge and develop your finances in such a way that God is glorified and you are victorious as a steward of God’s blessings. We challenge you to take that victory and share it with others.

Constitution Overview: This course explains the Constitution so that the student understands it clause by clause and its 27 amendments. It uses writings of the Founding Fathers, including the Federalist Papers, the Convention notes, the ratification debates and many other original documents.

I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power.” ~Thomas Jefferson
