What Does A1S4C2 of our Constitution Mean?
Can you imagine that our Founding Fathers, the Framers of our Constitution that has given us so much Liberty and blessings from God Almighty, were concerned that maybe Congress would not MEET each year? And now we wish they would go HOME more, mingle amongst real people so that we would not suffer under this two tiered justice system that is strangling us presently…
They knew that kings in European countries had been happy to not have their parliaments, or “states general” meet for years, even over 100 years at a time.
Nathaniel Gorham explains, “If the time be not fixed by this Constitution, disputes will arise in the legislature; and the states will be at a loss to adjust thereto the times of their elections. In the New England states, the annual time of meeting had been long fixed by their charters and constitutions, and no inconveniences had resulted. He thought it necessary that there should be one meeting at least every year, as a check on the executive department..”(1)
Roger Sherman asserted that he “… was decided for fixing the time, as well as for frequent meetings of the legislative body. Disputes and difficulties will arise between the two Houses, and between both and the states, if the time be changeable. Frequent meetings of parliament were required at the revolution in England, as an essential safeguard of liberty…” (2)
James Wilson and Oliver Ellsworth agreed that the best time to hold hearings of Congress would be the winter, as most of the representatives were also farmers.
Father, help us get back to full time self-government of We the People, and only short, part time employment for our representatives. Help them serve for only two or six years then let them be drawn back to their own businesses and families. Anoint and help us to simplify our lives back to the Gospel Purposes that you give us in Your Word. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen…
