Constitutional Conversations: A1 S8 C1 Debts

The Congress shall have Power… to pay the Debts ~ A1 S8 C1

The two most successful presidents in handling taxes were Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson.

“Jefferson was determined to keep the cost of the federal government within the available revenue coming in from imports. He therefore had the prevailing excise taxes repealed, abolished the internal revenue system, and began selling public lands. He was able to pay off half of the enormous Revolutionary War debt in eight years.

“Andrew Jackson took a similar position. He sold public lands until he had completely paid off the national debt and had a substantial surplus. He therefore returned $28 million to the states!”(1)

We see here a proven strategy that worked twice in America’s History after wars when the debt had reached a crushing level:

  1. Cut taxes on the American people
  2. Abolish the IRS
  3. Sell public lands to Americans

As Americans, we have neglected our responsibility to be watchmen over our governmental responsibilities. We have allowed our government to grow beyond a healthy level to where it is acting like our god and ruling over us. Repenting from this sin must include educating ourselves as to the Constitutional limits of our representatives. (WCNO, we thank you for being part of this!) and then committing to actively holding our representatives accountable to every step they take outside of these Constitutional limits.

Can you imagine if we do shrink the government back to size, cut taxes and abolish the IRS? This is not optional. Allowing a debt like this to crush the next generation is inconsiderate and irresponsible.

Father God Almighty, forgive us for abdicating our God-given right and responsibility to govern ourselves by Your Word and Way. Teach us Your Ways and help us to train the next generation how to honor and glorify You in all that we do, in Jesus’ Mighty, Holy Name. Amen.
