Congressional Prayer Room

Let’s keep our nation in prayer as we get closer to America’s 250th Anniversary of our Declaration of Independence.

In reading the Founders’ Bible this morning I found this quote from George Washington, our first President. He spoke this when proclaiming the 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation, at the request of Congress:

“It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor.”

Father, will You Restore America’s Biblical Heritage and make us a sheep nation, a Christian nation, once again? Help us to honor and bless You, O Lord God Almighty.

Later in this same article in the Founders’ Bible I learned about the Congressional Prayer Room. (I strongly recommend to those of you joining us in August for the American Government course, start reading this version of the Bible. You will LOVE it. You can purchase it here.) See the picture of the stained-glass window from the Congressional Prayer room. Beautiful. It has the scripture Psalm 16:1:

Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

What a great prayer for us today. Another amazing inspiration came to me today. These are the words to our National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. Read all of them; some of them we seldom sing, but we should always!

Star Spangled Banner by Frances Scott Key

  • O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
  • What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
  • Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
  • O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming?
  • And the rocket’s red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
  • Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
  • O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
  • O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

  • On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
  • Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
  • What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
  • As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
  • Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
  • In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
  • ‘Tis the star-spangled banner – O long may it wave
  • O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

  • And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
  • That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
  • A home and a Country should leave us no more?
  • Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.
  • No refuge could save the hireling and slave
  • From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
  • And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
  • O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

  • O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
  • Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation!
  • Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land
  • Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
  • Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
  • And this be our motto – “In God is our trust,”
  • And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
  • O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Constitutional Conversation: A4S1 Recognizing States

In these Constitutional Conversations, we have now gone through Articles I, II and III. The goal of our Framers was to divide the responsibilities of government into three separate branches and then balance those responsibilities with powerful checks on one another. This concept is firmly based in Isaiah 33:22, “For the Lord is our Judge, The Lord is our  Lawgiver, The Lord is our King…”

In Article IV, the goal was to get the states to cooperate together to become and function like a nation, as Article IV. SECTION. 1 says:

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.  ~ A4S1

This is one of the nationalizing clauses of the Constitution. It was designed to give each American the rights in all states that he presently enjoyed in his own state. It also prevented a citizen from simply by moving out of a particular state to avoid his responsibilities or liabilities. If a judgment were obtained against a person in one state, the authenticated record of that judgment could be taken to another state to try and convict him.

James Madison explained, “The power of prescribing by general laws the manner in which the public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of each state shall be proved, and the effect they shall have in other States, is an evident and valuable improvement on the clauses relating to this subject in the Articles of Confederation… The power here established may be rendered a very convenient instrument of justice, and be particularly beneficial on the borders of the contiguous States.”(1)

Father, help us understand the power of the states in our Constitutional authority. Let us not be ruled by men ambitious for power, but help us steward our Liberty to honor and glorify Your holy Name so that we can pass down Liberty to our children’s children. In Jesus’ Name we pray! Amen.
