Talents to the stewards: given according to “ability”
Talents to the stewards: given according to “ability”
In Matthew 25, Jesus is helping us understand the kingdom of God. Let’s talk about the Parable of the Talents; this starts in Matthew 25:14 where Jesus says:
“For the kingdom of heaven is like”
Woah! Ears open!!
“… a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one…”
So he’s leaving his assets to them to steward while he’s gone BUT why an uneven amount???
“to each according to his own ability”
So whose responsibility is that, to increase my ability? Only mine!
Whose responsibility is it to increase YOUR ability? ONLY yours…
“… and immediately he went on a journey. 16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money.19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
20 “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
OK, cool, but THEN:
24 “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed.25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’”
Is God a “hard man”? Jesus is teaching us here what the kingdom of God is like! When we KNOW Him, we learn that He is gentle, long-suffering, meek and generous like no one, like no man. So this lazy steward did not know God. He had not taken the time to “learn of Him”.
Have we taken the time to know Him? When you’ve cried out to Him, when you’ve experienced His love and healing, as He gets in the trenches of Life with you and pours His encouragement into you, even when your problems are your fault, you KNOW how forgiving He is and NOT hard or driving…
He has given us that chance to know Him, but if we refuse it, we sentence ourselves to judgment…
26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.”
This is MIND blowing to those of us who have been raised in the present Marxist culture… isn’t it shocking that He takes the talent and gives it to the one that already has TEN! Whaaaaaatttt???
Our minds might echo Marx who said, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need” to describe the “ideal” distribution of resources in a communist society.
But Jesus is teaching how the kingdom of God works! Why did the wealthy man give the one talent to the one who already had TEN????
Could it be because he was faithful, he was still increasing his ability?
29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.”
Goats but, but, but… sheep learn, sheep obey, sheep follow the Great Shepherd. We have to choose to leave our worldly thinking behind. We have to choose to obey Him, even when we do not understand.
Help us Father to know You, to align our mind, heart and soul with Your Word and how Your Kingdom operates.
Father, we need You. We need YOU. Help us to camp in Your Word to understand Your will, Your Way… that You are gentle, kind, truly loving and truly healing. We love You. Help us to know, understand Your kingdom and steward the talents that You have given us. Help us to be faithful. Help us to increase our abilities to build Your kingdom, for Your glory, in Jesus mighty name, Amen.

A5S1, Part 3: No More Importation of Slaves
Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article… ~ A5S1, Part 3
Unfortunately there were slave owners who insisted that slaves were their “property”. Warring tribes in Africa sold the losing tribes to slave merchants, who then distributed slaves mainly to South America and the islands, but about 5% to North America.(1) Thomas Jefferson tried to end slavery in the Virginia legislature, but King George III vetoed his attempts. He had written a 28th grievance in the draft of the Declaration of Independence addressing , speaking of King George III
“He has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating it’s most sacred rights of life & liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating & carrying them into slavery in another hemisphere, or to incur miserable death in their transportation thither. This piratical warfare, the opprobrium of infidel powers, is the warfare of the CHRISTIAN king of Great Britain. Determined to keep open a market where MEN should be bought & sold, he has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit or to restrain this execrable commerce.”(2)
Colonel Mason had warned in the Constitutional Convention, “This infernal traffic originated in the avarice of British merchants. The British Government constantly checked the attempts of Virginia to put a stop to it… Every master of slaves is born a petty tyrant. They bring the judgment of Heaven on a country.”(3)
As many of the Framers were abolitionists and five of the Northern colonies had set their slaves free, giving them the right to vote, it still took decades to end slavery. Thomas Jefferson signed into law that there would be no more importation of slaves.
Father, we thank You that You helped us end slavery. Would You help us end abortion, too? Help us to appreciate and understand the Biblical underpinnings of Liberty and to honor and bless You. We want no other king, but King Jesus!
