What is the Providential History of our Constitution?

The First Amendment

As exciting as it was to celebrate Constitution Day and the Ratification process last week, did you know that there were three patriotic Framers that wouldn’t sign it? They had concerns about the Constitution not having protection for individual rights.

As much as I am concerned about some of Alexander Hamilton‘s Federalist beliefs, he had some very valid concerns. He said nearly 300 rights are in the Constitution. He also thought since there were only 20 specific enumerated powers delegated to the federal government, then Congress has no authority to make law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, or hinder petitioning the Government for a redress of grievances.

There was no authority given to hinder their well regulated Militias or infringing on their God-given right to keep and bear arms.

No authority was given to quarter soldiers in homes, or to search people in their persons, houses, papers, and effects or deprive the citizen of his common law rights when charged with a crime, impose cruel and unusual punishment, or deprive citizens of any powers, not specifically delegated to the government.

Another of Hamilton’s concerns was that there might accidentally be rights left off the list that might be presumed to be forfeited. This is true of parental rights. There’s so much in our culture that assumes that children belong to the state and that children should go to government schools. There is an upswell from people presently to reassume our parental rights, there’s even an organization found at parentalrights.org, battling on the front lines to reestablish this power to parents.

So he did have some very valid points and as biblical worldview patriotic enthusiasts, we have to restore the original intent of the Constitution.

So help us, Almighty God!

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 NIV
