Teaching His Story

What are Parental Duties?

EDUCA’TION, noun [Latin educatio.] The bringing up, as of a child, instruction; formation of manners. education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.  ~ 1828 Dictionary

This last line puzzles me. I fully agree that the Bible clearly commissions parents to educate and disciple their children. So why did Noah Webster focus at the end on those who “neglect these duties?” I’m sure we have all seen parents who have neglected those duties. Then the children have a hard time navigating through life as adults. So the parents have to carry the responsibility of their children for the rest of their lives.

The Bible promises us, in Proverbs 29:17 NKJV:

Correct your son, and he will give you rest;
Yes, he will give delight to your soul.

Deuteronomy 6:7 is a model for us to see that God taught Moses to teach parents, “You shall teach them [God’s ways] diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” Isn’t this encouraging! We do not need big programs or degrees- just a loving home and deciding to teach our children diligently. Your home is your palace- make of it what you want, to nurture and instruct your children. If you are stuck working too much in a job because of finances, pray and seek God Almighty. He is your Jehovah Jireh, your Faithful Provider.

When we started homeschooling, I gave up my engineering career before it even got started. We had a car loan and college debt. We had lots of debt and no assets. I thought that we would be broke the rest of our lives. But we began to tithe and commit our way to the Lord. We had four children and homeschooled them as best we could. We are not the perfect family, but now those children are adults having their own children. They love us, God and their nation. (Thank You, Jesus!) They are wonderful parents and we get to see them raise their children in the Lord.

The secret that’s getting out is that having children is fun! Yes, they’re work. But it is true that when we raise up each one of our children in the way that he’s being called by God to go, life becomes an adventure of the highest caliber. We are kings and priests (Rev. 1:6); we are ambassadors for Christ (2 Cor. 5:20). All our children shall be taught of the Lord (Isaiah 54:13). And we have no greater joy and to see our children walk in Truth (3 John 1:4).

Jesus at age 12 was in Jerusalem celebrating the Passover with his family:

“Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”

And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.

Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”   ~ Luke 2: 46-52

Isn’t it amazing that at age 12 He was with the Jewish leaders asking questions and was “about His Father’s business”? And even being God Almighty, Creator of the whole Earth, He went back home from the temple to finish His education at home, with His own parents.  Luke 2:49 NKJV says the He grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Father, help us, in what ever situation we are in, to be focused on serving You, and to prepare and equip our children for what You have called them to do. Empower us to embrace this beautiful, holy calling of having children and raising them for Your glory!

4-17-2026 A3S2C3 Trial by Jury

The Trial of all Crimes, except in Cases of Impeachment; shall be by Jury… ~ A3S2C3

Cleon Skousen explains “Up until 1895 Americans enjoyed all of the powers of the original common law jury. This was a far more powerful instrument of justice than the jury system today. In fact, the Founders considered it the foremost defense in the American legal structure to protect the people against oppressive laws passed by the legislature or abusive judges, deliberately misinterpreting the law.

“The common law jury not only had the power to “determine the facts,” but it also had authority to “determine the law.” It could determine what the law meant and whether or not the jury considered constitutional. The jury could even ignore the law if it felt it would cause an injustice if applied to the case at hand…”(1)

“It must be understood, of course, that a jury could not repel a law, but if it thought the law was unconstitutional or oppressive in a particular case, the jury could return a verdict of “not guilty” on the basis of the opinion of the law.”(1)

This is why Patrick Henry said, “Why do we love this trial by jury? Because it prevents the hand of the oppression from cutting you off… Has not your mother country magnanimously preserved this noble privilege upwards of 1000 years?  … This gives me comfort – that, as long as I have existence, my neighbors will protect me.” (2)

Holmes agreed, “A jury of the peers would, from their local situation, have an opportunity to form a judgment of the character of the person charged with the crime, and also a judge to the credibility of the witnesses.” (3)

Wilson explained, “I know no mode of investigation equal to that by a jury: they hear every thing that is alleged; they not only hear the words, but they see and mark the features of the countenance; they can judge of weight due to such testimony; and moreover, it is a cheap and expeditious manner of distributing justice.” (4)

Father, teach us the Heritage that You gave us, that our Forefathers gave their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to secure for us, in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
