Women’s Issues from a Biblical & Historical Perspective + A1 S10 C1

I was recently asked to write about Women’s Issues from a dear friend, Linda our local DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Regent. I wasn’t sure that I was the best one for the job, but one thing is clear to me. Women that love and appreciate being women need to speak for us women. Gone are the days that we can let any one else speak for us. So here we go, I would be so grateful for your prayers. Lord willing, I will be sharing monthly. My first lady to share is Mercy Warren.

Mercy Otis Warren (1728-1814) captured the essence of Women’s Issues  in this section from her History of the Rise, Progress and Termination of the American Revolution.(1)

“The solemnity that covered every countenance, when contemplating the sword uplifted, and the horrors of civil war rushing to habitations not inured to scenes of rapine and misery; even to the quiet cottage, where only concord and affection had reigned; stimulated to observation a mind that had not yielded to the assertion, that all political attentions lay out of the road of female life. It is true there are certain appropriate duties assigned to each sex; and doubtless it is the more peculiar province of masculine strength, not only to repel the bold invader of the rights of his country and of mankind, but in the … style of manly eloquence, to describe the blood-stained field, and relate the story of slaughtered armies.

“Sensible of this, the trembling heart has recoiled at the magnitude of the undertaking, and the hand often shrunk back from the task; yet, recollecting that every domestic enjoyment depends on the unimpaired possession of civil and religious liberty, that a concern for the welfare of society ought equally to glow in every human breast, the work was not relinquished.”(2)

Then she set about the work of capturing our history to instruct us:

“Providence has clearly pointed out the duties of the present generation, particularly the paths which Americans ought to tread. The United States form a young republic, a confederacy which ought ever to be cemented by a union of interests and affection, under the influence of those principles which obtained their independence…”(3)

May our women re-capture this essence that made us a republic! In the Bible, we see in Genesis that God says that its not good for man to be alone. Woman is created to be the solution. When Adam sees her, he exclaims At last! … She shall be called woman.” (Genesis 2:23 CJB)

Why was he so happy? What is the purpose of woman that she was such an immediate blessing? Noah Webster defines purpose in part by saying, “We believe the Supreme Being created intelligent beings for some benevolent and glorious purpose…

Adam surely thought so.

A1 S10 C1  No Law-fare

No State shall… pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility.   ~ A1 S10 C1

The meaning of “Attainder” from the 1828 Noah Webster’s Dictionary, which captured America’s Cultural understanding at the height of when we reasoned Biblically, stated, “Literally a staining, corruption, or rendering impure; a corruption of blood. Hence… The judgment of death, or sentence of a competent tribunal upon a person convicted of treason or felony, which judgment attaints, taints or corrupts his blood, so that he can no longer inherit lands. The consequences of this judgment are, forfeiture of lands, tenements and hereditaments, loss of reputation, and disqualification to be a witness in any court of law. A statute of Parliament attainting a criminal, is called an act of attainder.”

Our Founding Fathers experienced the unjust attainting of accused persons by the wicked King George III. He would “attain” or stain persons thereby preventing them from inheriting property and preventing their children from inheriting property, so said property would all conveniently go to the king, impoverishing his subjects unjustly.

Ex post facto, means after the fact, so states were forbidden from convicting men from laws passed after the fact.

All contracts agreed upon before the Constitution were to be honored after the Constitution was ratified and no laws were to be made that would violate any present contracts.

Finally, no Titles of Nobility are to be rendered in America. As the Patriots proclaimed through out the American Revolution, “No king but King Jesus!”

Father, we cry out to You to restore True Biblical Justice to our nation. We ask You that all law-fare cease. Let our lawyers and judges fear You more than man. May Your people serve by leading in these areas of responsibility that we have forsaken, O God. Forgive us and heal our land we pray in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
