Who were “We the People”?

Who were the founders of our Constitution who began our Liberty with “We the People”? These signers had made a covenant with each other to pledge their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to appeal to the Supreme Judge of the world to defend their God-given rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Did they come up with these ideas themselves?

No, they were Providentially prepared. What do we mean by that? The 1828 Noah Webster Dictionary defines Providential as:

Effected by the providence of God; referable to divine providence; proceeding from divine direction or superintendence; as the providential contrivance of things; a providential escape from danger. How much are we indebted to God’s unceasing providential care!

Did you know that our founding fathers had founding fathers? They learned the purpose of government from Algernon Sydney who said, “The only ends for which governments are constituted, and obedience rendered to them, are the obtaining of justice and protection.”

John Locke also used Biblical reasoning to teach our Founders to refute the “divine right of kings” in “Of Civil Government.”

Montesquieu’s “The Spirit of Laws” explained how to develop a system of checks and balances  and that “In order to have this liberty, it is requisite the government be so constituted as one man need not be afraid of another.”

Montesquieu taught that the three branches of government, when delegated to men or a body of magistrates, must be separated or “there be no liberty”. These three branches of government are found in Isaiah 33:22:

“For the Lord is our Judge,

The Lord is our Lawgiver,

The Lord is our King;

He will save us.”

May We the People come back to God Almighty as our Judge, Lawgiver and King!
